Selection follows Unity’s record-pace criticality under the Nuclear Energy Launch Pad and sets the path to full-power operation in 2027
WASHINGTON, Oct. 7, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Deployable Energy today announced its selection to conduct a full-power demonstration of the Unity Nuclear Battery at the National Reactor Innovation Center’s Demonstration of Microreactor Experiments (DOME) facility at Idaho National Laboratory (INL). The 2027 campaign marks a major milestone for the company and for the nation’s advanced nuclear sector, advancing Unity to full-power operation and positioning it for commercial deployment. Unity is a compact, modular, and transportable nuclear power system designed to deliver continuous power for industrial, maritime, remote and other applications.

This selection reflects on the speed Deployable Energy delivered the first stage of its reactor demonstration program at INL. On June 30, 2026, Unity achieved criticality roughly 150 days after project kickoff, making Deployable Energy the first company under NRIC’s Nuclear Energy Launch Pad initiative to reach that milestone and delivering the third advanced reactor criticality required to meet the July 4, 2026, goal set by Executive Order 14301. This achievement was the fastest and lowest cost reactor development in U.S. history. The 2027 DOME campaign carries that momentum directly into the next phase of development.
Selection for testing in DOME by the Department of Energy serves as a powerful validation of both the Unity design and the development process behind it. The DOME testbed was purpose-built within the containment structure of the former Experimental Breeder Reactor-II to host fueled experimental reactors producing up to 20 megawatts of thermal energy. For Deployable Energy, the opportunity to conduct a full-power campaign at this national asset affirms the strength of its technology, its safety discipline and its ability to execute.
“DOE has been an incredible partner, and we are thrilled to continue our testing campaign at INL. Being selected for DOME confirms that Unity, and the way we build it, are working,” said Bobby Gallagher, Co-Founder and CEO of Deployable Energy. “We met the July 4th goal by moving fast without compromising safety or quality, and DOME lets us carry that speed into full-power operation without building a one-off nuclear facility around the experiment. Build the reactor, learn quickly, and move to manufacturing: that is the model the advanced nuclear industry needs. Our 2027 demonstration at INL puts Unity one step closer to the field for our customers.”
Deployable Energy will conduct a number of historic firsts for the Unity Nuclear Battery’s development including: 1. factory fueling the reactor, 2. transporting the fueled reactor, 3. installing and deploying the reactor into DOME, and conducting full power operations, 4. redeploying the reactor to a new location at the laboratory after DOME operations, and 5. completing fuel disposition, demonstrating the full life cycle of the reactor system. This campaign will generate integrated performance data across the reactor and its supporting systems, providing the engineering and operational basis for repeatable manufacturing, transportation, and operation. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) will continue to observe our demonstrations as they did with our criticality test. This is an important step in supporting our licensing engagement to achieve commercial deployment.
“Deployable Energy’s selection demonstrates what DOME was built to be: a national test bed that hosts one developer’s reactor after another, not a facility dedicated to a single experiment,” said John Wagner, Director of Idaho National Laboratory. “They earned this opportunity with their speed to criticality — work that reflects effective public-private partnership with INL and DOE staff every step of the way. We look forward to supporting Deployable Energy’s next major step toward commercial deployment.”
Over the coming months, Deployable Energy will work with NRIC and INL on engineering, experiment planning, fuel, safety, and operational preparations for the 2027 campaign. In addition to this testing campaign and utilizing its outputs, Deployable Energy is the only company selected to conduct the first commercial nuclear maritime demonstration under DOE-authorization in the U.S.
