Battery life, usable energy and replacement costs can matter as much as the purchase price, Goldenmate Battery says, as U.S. outage hours climb.
ZAOZHUANG, CN / ACCESS Newswire / November 3, 2026 / As U.S. households head into winter storm season, Goldenmate is urging shoppers to look past the price tag of an uninterruptible power supply and check the battery inside it.
U.S. electricity customers averaged 11 hours of power interruptions in 2024, the most in 10 years, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. Even a brief outage can shut down a desktop computer, cut off an online meeting or take a home network offline.
An uninterruptible power supply, or UPS, is a battery unit that keeps connected electronics running when utility power fails. Most models do the same basic job, but battery chemistry affects how long they last, how much stored energy is usable and what they cost to own.
Lead-acid batteries have been widely used in UPS systems for decades. Lithium iron phosphate, or LiFePO4, is the newer alternative and the chemistry Goldenmate uses in products such as its 1500VA/1200W LiFePO4 UPS, whose product page lists the battery, runtime and outlet specifications buyers can compare against other models.
How Much Longer Does a LiFePO4 Battery Last?
A LiFePO4 battery can be rated for more than four times the cycles of an AGM lead-acid battery, based on an example from battery maker Victron Energy: about 2,500 cycles at 80% depth of discharge, compared with about 600 cycles at 50%. The figures describe specific batteries, not industry standards.
Cycle life is the number of charge and discharge cycles a battery can complete before its capacity falls to a set level. Depth of discharge, or DoD, is the share of capacity used in each cycle.
Calendar life matters too, because a home UPS may sit on standby for months between outages. UPS manufacturers commonly cite three to five years for valve-regulated lead-acid, or VRLA, batteries and eight to 10 years for lithium-ion UPS batteries. Temperature and usage can move those numbers.
How Much Stored Energy Can Buyers Actually Use?
A LiFePO4 battery generally returns more of the energy put into it and is rated for use at a greater depth of discharge. Victron Energy puts round-trip efficiency at about 92% for LiFePO4 and about 80% for lead-acid, or roughly 920 watt-hours versus 800 watt-hours recovered per 1,000 watt-hours of charging.
Depth of discharge affects usable capacity as well. Take two hypothetical batteries, each rated at 1,000 watt-hours. At a 50% discharge target, the lead-acid battery provides about 500 watt-hours. At an 80% target, the LiFePO4 battery provides about 800 watt-hours, or 60% more.
Actual results depend on battery design, temperature, discharge rate and operating conditions. These battery-level figures do not describe the overall efficiency or measured runtime of a complete UPS.
Does a Higher Wattage Mean Longer Backup?
No. Wattage describes the electrical load a UPS can support, while watt-hours describe the energy its battery stores. A 1,200-watt UPS does not automatically run longer than a 600-watt model, so shoppers should compare published runtime figures at specific loads rather than rely on power ratings alone.
Runtime also depends on battery capacity, connected equipment, inverter efficiency and operating conditions. Buyers equipping a home office, gaming setup or household network need both numbers to size a unit correctly.
What Else Should a UPS Buyer Check?
Battery chemistry is only part of the decision. Buyers should also check transfer time, output waveform and voltage regulation, which shape how a UPS behaves the moment power changes. A basic surge protector cannot fill that role, because it cannot supply electricity during an outage.
- Transfer time: how quickly a UPS switches to battery power when utility electricity is interrupted. Fast switching helps compatible devices stay on during brief outages.
- Pure sine wave output: an important consideration for certain modern computer power supplies and sensitive electronics.
- Automatic voltage regulation, or AVR: stabilizes common voltage fluctuations without immediately drawing on the battery.
Goldenmate’s 1500VA/1200W model pairs a 296.96-watt-hour LiFePO4 battery rated for more than 3,000 cycles with pure sine wave output and AVR. The company lists a transfer time of 10 milliseconds or less and up to 30 minutes of backup at a 600-watt reference load. The unit has eight surge-protected, battery-backed outlets, an LCD status display, USB-A and USB-C charging ports and a two-year limited warranty.
Is a Lithium UPS Worth the Higher Price?
It depends on how long the buyer plans to keep the unit. Lead-acid models remain a practical choice for shoppers focused on a lower purchase price, but a battery that lasts three to five years could need one or two replacements over eight years of ownership, and each replacement adds cost.
- Rated cycles (Victron Energy example): about 600 at 50% DoD for lead-acid and about 2,500 at 80% DoD for LiFePO4.
- Round-trip efficiency (Victron Energy): about 80% for lead-acid and about 92% for LiFePO4.
- Usable energy from a 1,000-watt-hour battery: about 500 watt-hours for lead-acid and about 800 watt-hours for LiFePO4.
- Commonly cited service life: three to five years for VRLA batteries and eight to 10 years for lithium-ion UPS batteries.
- Battery replacements over eight years: one or two for lead-acid and possibly none for LiFePO4.
A lithium UPS with a longer battery service life could reduce those replacement expenses. The actual savings depend on purchase price, replacement costs, usage patterns and overall system life.
The Bottom Line
The choice between lead-acid and LiFePO4 is more than a technical detail. It can affect how often a battery needs replacing, how efficiently energy is stored and how much time users have to respond when electricity fails.
Shoppers can start by adding up the watts of the equipment they need to protect, finding the runtime at that load on the specification sheet and pricing battery replacements over the years they plan to own the unit. That comparison says more than a wattage rating or a sticker price.
