Divert, Inc., a circular economy company on a mission to prevent food from being wasted, today announced new organic designations for two of its food-derived liquid fertilizers, expanding the company’s ability to return valuable nutrients recovered from unsold food to agriculture.
Divert’s 6-0-0 Organic ammonium liquid fertilizer is now OMRI Listed® for use in organic food production under U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) National Organic Program standards and registered as an Organic Input Material with the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA). Divert’s 7-0-0 Organic ammonium liquid fertilizer is also registered as an Organic Input Material with the CDFA and the company is pursuing an OMRI listing.
The products are part of Divert® Food-Derived Fertilizers, a portfolio of agricultural products created through Divert’s Circular Infrastructure Platform that recovers resources from unsold food. The portfolio includes:
- Procyclos™ 6-0-0 Organic – Ammonium Liquid Fertilizer (OMRI Listed® and CDFA Registered)
- Procyclos™ 7-0-0 Organic – Ammonium Liquid Fertilizer (CDFA Registered)
- Procyclos™ CST 1-0.5-0 – Conventional Solid Soil Amendment
- Procyclos™ AMS 7-0-0 – Conventional Ammonium Sulfate Liquid Fertilizer
“Food that would otherwise go to landfill can now be converted into renewable energy and nutrients that go back into the food system,” said Ryan Begin, CEO and co-founder of Divert. “With fertilizer and energy costs remaining high, reliable, domestically produced sources of both make good business and environmental sense. Divert’s Circular Infrastructure Platform is designed to make that circular model work at national scale.”
At the heart of its Platform, Divert’s Integrated Diversion & Energy Facilities process unsold food that can no longer be donated, recovering resources that might otherwise go to waste. Divert® Food-Derived Fertilizers offer a commercial scale, closed loop pathway to improving nutrient availability. In addition to recovering these valuable nutrients, Divert’s facilities convert unsold food into carbon-negative renewable energy, reclaim food-bound water for beneficial reuse, and generate data that helps its customers reduce waste and increase donations.
The Organic Materials Review Institute (OMRI) reviews input products such as fertilizers, pest controls, and livestock care products against USDA National Organic Program standards for use in organic production. California’s Organic Input Material Program registers fertilizing materials intended for use in organic crop and food production and verifies compliance with California fertilizing materials requirements and USDA National Organic Program standards.
The organic designations further Divert’s goal of keeping valuable resources in use across the food system. Nutrients recovered from unsold food can now support the production of new food in certified organic agriculture.
